Yahoo shuts down MyBlogLog, a $10 mil purchase you never heard of

In the grand scheme of things, $10 million isn't a ton of money for a big company like Yahoo! to spend acquiring another company. Still, for an embattled Yahoo!, shutting down MyBlogLog is another sad trombone in its symphony of missteps.

MyBlogLog was a service which allowed bloggers to create a community for their sites. The shutdown was called out in the famous "sunsetting" slideshow in late 2010, where Yahoo! revealed that popular bookmarking site Delicious would also not be part of its future plans.

Despite all this, Yahoo! remains one of the most popular sites on the Internet -- it actually topped ComScore's U.S. traffic chart for January 2011.

How to change the screen time-out on Android

android
This week's tips series was all about Android, highlighting some the operating system's built-in utilities, and better ways of getting stuff done. For other technology tips, check our Tips index.

Earlier today, I was helping my brother set up his new Motorola Defy. While the phone itself was quite nice (and tough), the screen kept turning off after just a few seconds of idle time. It was starting to drive us crazy, but after quickly poking through the settings we fixed it. Here's how:

1) Go to Settings > Display

2) Tap Screen timeout

3) Tap the timeout value you wish to use

Of course there's a trade-off between convenience and battery life - having the screen time out after two whole minutes can be nice, but your battery may not last very long. And while you're here, you can also easily adjust your display's brightness.

This tip wraps up this week's Tips series. What would you like to see next week? Let me know in the comments!

Clicker.com analyzes Amazon Prime Instant Video offerings vs the competition

Amazon's Prime Instant Video service is finally here, and while we know how it works and that, unlike Netflix, it will play nicely with your 'Droid, how does its content measure up? Clicker.com pulls in feeds from all the online video sites and has broken down its data into this handy chart to investigate just that. The numbers above don't lie, Netflix has far more content at the moment, and right now, the Amazon service compares more directly to Hulu Plus than anything else. However, it is an excellent start for Amazon to grow from and the breakdown points out what numbers might miss -- while Amazon's movie selections are hurting for any high profile flicks not already on Netflix, it does bring some otherwise unavailable episodes of Mister Rogers Neighborhood, Bonanza and Dr. Who (1963) to bear -- click through for all the details, while it may not be enough to cause you to switch just yet there's definitely enough reason to keep an eye on this latest entrant to the market.

MetroTwit v5 packs more features into the slick Windows Twitter app

MetroTwit was one of our favorite new Windows apps of 2010, and the first updates in 2011 have added even more functionality to the already slick Twitter program. For starters, several new URL shortening services have been added, including goo.gl. There's also TwitLonger support for updates you just can't cram into that 140-character limit.

While some users may enjoy MetroTwit's autocomplete and spell check functions, others may not -- so options have been added to disable both in your MetroTwit settings. You can even utilize Proxlet to block unwanted noise from your Twitter stream.

MetroTwit has matured rapidly, and might just be the best Windows Twitter app out there right now, as long as you only need to monitor a single account. It is still considered a beta, though, so don't be totally surprised if you experience the odd bug. MetroTwit is also now available on FileHippo, one of our favorite places to download Windows software. Well done, MetroTwit crew!

Google Chrome's backgrounding features make the browser even more like an OS

Your operating system can run processes in the background -- things like realtime antivirus protection and streaming movies and music around your home -- and so can Google Chrome. Background apps have existed in Chrome and Chromium for some time, but now that the Chrome Web Store is open and its apps are available for installation, Google has posted a blog about why backgrounding is cool.

It's really all about Chrome being your "OS" even if you're using a Windows or Mac computer. With the ability to run Web apps in the background and Native Client support headed to the beta and stable channels in relatively short order, Chrome Web Apps will soon be capable of doing many of the same things your traditional desktop apps can do.

Google's post talks about using backgrounding to issue notifications (as apps like TweetDeck and exfm do) or to prefetch data. There's really no end to the possibilities, and we're exited to see what the next generation of Chrome Web Apps can really do.

Apple and Intel unveil Thunderbolt I/O technology

thunderboltSo it's perhaps not the most original moniker that Apple and Intel could have chosen, but it's here just the same. After years of waiting Apple has launched its implementation of Intel's Light Peak standard and it's called Thunderbolt. It's making its appearance on new MacBook Pro models and it's promising 10Gb/second transfer rates. That's dual-channel, too so you'll get 10Gb/sec both to and from your devices. Apple suggests this will be useful for external RAID arrays, Gigabit Ethernet adapters, and also mentions support for "FireWire and USB consumer devices" along with HDMI, DVI, and VGA over DisplayPort. Apple expects that Thunderbolt will be "widely adopted as a new standard for high performance I/O," but we think the USB 3.0 crew might have a thing or two to say about that. Full PR is embedded below.

Update: Intel has thrown up its page on the technology, and it looks like the Light Peak name is officially no more. Intel indicates this speed will be enough to transfer a full-length HD movie (roughly 10 - 20GB in size) in less than 30 seconds. Intel also reinforces that this is compatible with existing DisplayPort devices and it also uses the PCI Express protocol for enhanced compatibility. Daisy-chaining will be possible, along with bus-powered devices, and cables can be made using either optical or electrical construction.
