Cloud Security Takes More Than Superficial Teamwork

Teamwork is important. We all know this to be the case whenever we do anything in a group involving other people. But arbitrary -- even directionless -- teamwork doesn't make success by itself, no matter what the motivational poster might tell you. There are different kinds of teamwork. Consider, for example, the difference between a three-legged race and a relay race.

Pre 2 available for $150 through Verizon on February 17th

Call it The Curious Case of the Pre 2: If you check the handset out on HP's site, it will cost you $100 after rebate (under contract of course). But if you wander over to Verizon's little piece of the Interwebs, the same phone has just been announced for $150 (new contract price) after rebate. So, let's suppose for a moment that you had a choice between the two -- which would you pick? That's what we thought. Available on February 17, check out the mind-bending PR after the break for more details.

How to use Google Chrome as your default PDF reader on Windows

I don't often need to open a PDF file, and when I do it's typically something I'm looking at in my Web browser. Since I'm using Google Chrome, the built-in PDF viewer is what I use 90% of the time. I do, however, get the odd email at my day job (where we don't use webmail) with a PDF attachment I need to read.

So I thought, "why not open those in Chrome, too?" It's easy enough to set up. Here's how to do it.

First, locate your Google Chrome executable. The easiest way to do this is to right-click your Chrome shortcut and choose properties from the menu. In the box labeled target, you'll see the complete path to Chrome.exe. Highlight that text and copy it to your clipboard.

Apple?s Digital Newsstand Just Disrupted The Publishing Industry

How much pricing power exactly does Apple have over publishers desperate to figure out a digital strategy that results in paying subscribers? A hell of a lot?at least that is what Apple is betting with its new subscription billing service. Apple is taking a 30 percent cut of all digital subscription revenues. Just take a moment to think about that for a second. Up until now, Apple took a 30 percent cut of one-time purchase in iTunes, whether those were apps or music. So the 30 percent number doesn't seem strange, at least not to consumers. What do we care how the money is split up as long as we all of these digital goodies are affordable? But publishers and other media companies with subscription businesses (cough, Netflix, cough) care very much. Apple is saying if we deliver a paying customer, we will take 30 percent of their subscription dollars in perpetuity as long as they consume your media on our devices.

ZTE Amigo, Blade, and Skate hands-on

ZTE outed several new sets -- and a tablet -- at MWC 2011, so we went to grab some specs and pics of the Blade, Skate, and the Amigo (from left to right). The ZTE Skate is the top of the line product in this group with Android 2.3 -- though, the placard at the stand has been blanked out -- triple-band GSM, HSPA in 1900 / 2100Mhz range, a 4.3-inch WVGA capacitive display, 5 megapixel cam, and likely the smallest keyboard we've ever seen, seriously, have a peek at the gallery. The Blade, which as our favorite in the group, runs Android 2.2, is downgraded to a 3 megapixel camera, a 3.5-inch display, quad-band GSM and 900 / 2100Mhz HSPA. The Amigo -- what may be the lowliest as far as numbers are concerned -- still has decent specs such as a 3.2-inch display, triple band GSM, 1900 / 2100 HSPA, and a side-sliding QWERTY keypad. The Blade and Skate both have great build quality, the screens are really bright and easily seen, the Amigo appears a bit more washed out and the housing build quality feels very cheap. The Skate is definitely the winner in the bells and whistles category, but unless you can swap out the onscreen keyboard it would definitely get a pass -- and again, check out Joanna's finger modeling in the gallery for proof. Enjoy the giant glossy gallery.

Honeycomb to come to HTC Flyer

@HTC

We all were a little surprised when HTC showed off the Flyer (see our hands-on here) and it wasn't running Honeycomb.  It looks like they aim to fix this situation in the second quarter with an OS update according to their official Facebook account.  We reached out to HTC for confirmation, and we were told:

"I can confirm that we are working to bring a Honeycomb update to Flyer in short order – however, I don’t have any specific information on what the timing may be."

We'll have to see if that second-quarter window pans out. But either way, it's pretty sweet that we do have word from HTC that Honeycomb will be coming to the Flyer!

Engage wireless LCD is just a few letters short of a brand tie-in
There comes a time in every computer user's life when they want to step away from the machine -- but still control it. The Engage WirelessLCD from uWrite Touch is one way of doing just that, even if you need to step so far away you can't see a monitor any more. It's a battery-powered LCD that makes a direct connection to a PC or Mac using a separate adapter, replicating the machine's video output onto the 10.1-inch, 1024 x 600 wireless and touchable display. 30 feet of range and 3.5 hours of battery life are on offer and, while no pricing is available, given it's intended for schools and businesses we'll guess falls well outside of impulse buy territory.

Help save the earth in Survivosaur -- Time Waster

survivosaur
Everybody knows how the dinosaurs became extinct - you know, the big meteor and everything. But did it really have to happen? How would things have gone had you been there, dressed up as a huge dinosaur with a jet-pack and all sorts of projectiles, ready to save the day? Great question, and that's exactly what Survivosaur strives to answer.

The jet-pack is only the beginning here - you, the dino-protagonist, are tricked out to the max with alternative weapons, an optional shield, extra health and more. You use this massive arsenal to shoot at oncoming meteors and explode them in space, thus preventing the extinction of yourself and your kind. But not everything that comes from space is bad - you get bonuses (those little dollars flying in the screenshots), as well as health packs.

Once you amass enough lucre (say, $10), you can hit SPACE and access the in-game accessory store, where you get all of those fancy power-ups I just mentioned. Gameplay is super-simple - you run (or rather, circle the globe) with the arrow keys, and aim and fire with the mouse. But thanks to the power-up system, this game is surprisingly engaging.
