Paranormal Shark Activity is a hopping Time Waster

paranormalsharkactivity
The shark is a majestic creature; it's also pretty dangerous. When Paranormal Shark Activity starts off, you're just a dude hanging out on the pier. You quickly discover there's no way to go left (back to the city or the port, presumably) - there's only one choice, which is to keep going right, into the water.

Once you go into the water, the actual game starts. A huge (and I do mean huge) shark appears on the left side of the frame, and you have to keep jumping between crates and platforms floating on the water to try and keep ahead of the shark.

When you fall into the water between crates, you don't drown - you just float there, idling about as shark bait. Hitting SPACE makes you jump for the next platform.

Once you've gone for a short while, you will start picking up the occasional bomb along the way. Hitting UP will launch a bomb at the shark, which will then disappear for a few seconds.

When the shark reappears, it may do so from any side of the screen - so don't get to close too the right side!

Firefox 4 beta 11 released, more bugs stomped, beta 12 still to come

While the main Firefox beta website has not yet been updated, Firefox 4 beta 11 is now ready to be downloaded from Mozilla's FTP site. [en-US build / en-GB build]

As far as we're aware, this is just another milestone on the way to the release candidate; in other words, it's a bug-stomp release, so it'll be both faster and more stable than beta 10. If you're still holding off because of its beta moniker -- stop it! Download it! Try it out! You may even prefer it to Chrome (really).

Incidentally, there are no release notes for this build yet -- but we'll update this post when Mozilla provides some.

White iPhone 4 Conversion Gut Check

Before you decide to "improve" the aesthetic appearance of your cellphone, a checklist needs to be written. Simple questions, such as does it improve the functionality in any way? Will it function worse despite enhanced appearance? Is it worth it? In the iPhone repair world, the iPhone 4 white conversion service is selling fast throughout the U.S. When going through an informal checklist, though, nothing adds up.

KindleLendingClub Forced By Amazon To Rebrand; Now BookLending.com

In early January, Amazon rolled out a feature that allows Kindle users to lend books to another Kindle user a for 14 day period. KindleLendingClub spawned from this feature as a way to connect people for lending their e-books. The service quickly accumulated more than 12,000 people lending and borrowing on the platform. Users can post books that they want to lend in a public forum and can also request to borrow books. And you can search for borrowers and lenders by title on the platform. Unfortunately, KindleLendingClub just received a call from Amazon, requesting that the startup change its name and domain. After all, Amazon owns the trademark for 'Kindle' and is within its rights to ask the startup to change its name. And Amazon has enforced this in the past.

SHIFT: Freedom! is a fun, intelligent platformer -- Time Waster

shiftfreedom
Creating a good casual game is not a simple task: On the one hand, people want to "get" the game instantly, and just start playing without having to read lengthy tutorials or figure out complex controls. On the other hand, you don't want the game to be too one-dimensional.

And really, the first thing I noticed about SHIFT: Freedom! is that learning how to play was fun. The built-in tutorial walks you through a couple of levels, but you still have to think a little bit, and it's very fast.

As you might have gathered from the title, this is one platformer that doesn't emphasize crazy speed and agility. It's more cerebral - you have to figure your way out of every level using just what you see on the screen (no extra "tools" or anything like that).

It's a lot of fun to play, and due to the way it "teaches" you, you keep finding out new things you can do during the first few levels. And by the time you're done with those, you might just be hooked!

RetroMash is a Tetris-Space Invaders mash-up -- Time Waster

retromash
Do you enjoy 8-bit music? How about retro classics, like Space Invaders and Tetris? If so, RetroMash is just the game for you.

It's an interesting mash-up: Blocky-looking space invaders drop down from the top of the level; you have a cursor that looks like a Tetris block. You must place the cursor so space invaders "fill" all of the available spots in it, and then click to make the space invaders explode. As soon as that happens, the cursor changes its shape, becoming another Tetris block.

Another rule is that you must place the cursor so that it touches the "bottom" of the space-invader group. Meaning, you can't just plant it anywhere, but at least a part of it must always touch the "open air" at the bottom of the space invader pile.

The game starts off very easy; the first three minutes were trivial - something I could definitely do while calmly sipping a cup of coffee. Then it started getting a bit more intense. All in all, it's a fun game, and I love how creative the mash-up is.

Sony Ericsson touts Xperia Play multiplayer gaming, promises 50 titles at launch

A gaming phone's not very special without some games to back it up, and Sony Ericsson has thankfully filled in at least a few new details about that part of the equation at its MWC press conference today. That includes a hint of some mobile hotspot-based multiplayer gaming, and a promise of "over 50 titles" that will be available at launch, including Guitar Hero, Assassin's Creed, Dead Space and Reckless Racing. Unfortunately, it's not clear how many of those will actually be exclusive to the Xperia Play as opposed to Android phones in general, although it seems that Dungeon Defenders Wave 2 will be one non-PlayStation exclusive to the platform (along with some extra levels for Reckless Racing). Stay tuned for more details as we get them.

Update: Head on past the break for a video that gives a glimpse of a few more games.

Motorola Atrix 4G pre-orders begin at AT&T

March 6th is the official street date, but you can lay down your money for Motorola's modular smartphone right now, as the Atrix 4G and its suite of incredible Webtop docks are now available for pre-order. $200 buys you the biometric HSPA+ smartphone on a two-year contract, and it'll cost you an additional $300 to turn it into a portable netbook of sorts -- though as we feared, you'll need to pay $45 a month for the DataPro 4GB + Tethering data plan (on top of your phone bill) to actually use it on the go. Another bummer is that the HD Multimedia Dock (enabling desktop-like functionality) will run $130, a good bit more than we thought we'd see it for. All in all, the Atrix is looking like quite an investment, so perhaps you'd be best served waiting for our full review. But don't let us tell you what to do with your hard-earned dough!
