Linpus Lite tablet-optimized Linux OS gets hands-on treatment (video)

While tablet hardware is capable of running a full desktop OS, the experience often leaves something to be desired. Most desktop OSes are still designed to be used with a keyboard and mouse, and you're not likely to attach either to a tablet while you're riding a bus to work.

Linpus offered a full Linux distro for quite some time, and now they're offering a tablet-optimized interface for MeeGo. Carrypad scored some time with the slate-friendly Linpus Lite, and we've posted the video after the break. The new release offers full multitouch support, slick-looking media player and e-book reader apps, as well as media sharing and video chat features. Linpus Lite will be on display at Mobile World Congress soon, so our man Vlad may have additional insights to offer next week.

Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough?

For a long, long time now, in households far and near, a battle has raged over whether young padawans would be allowed to play with their parents’ movie-realistic and super-expensive Force FX lightsaber replicas, or be relegated to the clunky, much cheaper toyish versions found at toy stores across the Outer Rim (and here on [...]

SXSW 2011 torrent lets you download 4.5 gigs of free music

Each year in the months leading up to the SXSW music festival, a massive collection of songs from participating performers gets assembled. The collection gets rolled up into a jumbo-sized torrent, and then given to the masses for free. The 2011 SXSW torrent packs almost four and a half gigs of musical goodness -- nearly 800 songs! The best part is that this is all guilt-free, legal-to-download-and-enjoy music.

If you're not keen on downloading the whole shebang, you can also listen to the included songs via Shoutcast -- all you need is a compatible player, like Winamp.

CorelDraw video tutorial: Pulling in photos and clip art from the Web

corelconnect
This is the fourth (and final) of our CorelDRAW video tutorials. You can watch the others by browsing the CorelDRAW tag.

When creating a vector image or a composition, you don't always have to re-invent the wheel. After all, it is more than likely that whatever it is you're trying to do has been done before, at least in part. Using existing images or clip art ("media assets" in business parlance) can greatly speed up your work, and even improve the overall look of the image you produce.

To this end, I've chosen to create a video showing Corel Connect. It's a media search engine that comes with CorelDRAW, and helps you pull in images from Flickr, Fotolia, iStockphoto, and of course, your local hard drive and CorelDRAW's own clip art repositories.

Corel Connect ties in very tightly with CorelDRAW itself, and also does a nice job of protecting the original creator's rights so you don't "forget" to license whatever content you're using. See for yourself after the jump!

Samsung Galaxy Tab II and Galaxy S II pics leak out ahead of Barcelona event

There are still twelve hours to go before Samsung unveils its new products at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, but somehow there are already a series of pictures allegedly "from the event." We're not complaining, though, because four of them show off the new 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab II. We discovered yesterday that Sammy's slate will run Android 3.0 Honeycomb at 1280 x 800 resolution and on a 1GHz processor, and heard rumors it'd have an 8 megapixel camera with HD video recording as well, but this is the first time we've laid eyes on a decent image of the tablet, and we imagine you're in the same boat. Join us on a journey over to Samsung Hub to see the full set (and more shots of the Samsung Galaxy S II), or if you're too busy priming your touchscreen-smudging thumbs, simply hit the break to see a render of what the unit's back might look like.

[Thanks, Dell P.]
