Watch a Rocket Launcher Fail In Hilarious, Terrifying Fashion [Video]

The best way to scare the stuffing out of new recruits? Fire up the ol' rocket launcher, but rig it so that the rocket in question just piddles out a few feet ahead. Nothing like presumed certain death to build morale! [dpnf via The Daily What] More »

Evernote for iOS completely overhauled, now faster and easier to use

Evernote 4 for iOS, massive UI overhaulEvernote for iPhone, which is almost two and a half years old, has been completely overhauled. The new version, Evernote 4 for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, is free, and available from the App Store.

In the blog post launching the new version, Evernote says that the new version is based on its findings from the last two and a half years. "[...] Users want faster access, easier note creation, better browsing and more ways to find what they're looking for" -- and, with Evernote 4, that's exactly what you get.

The New Note screen now looks completely different, and now features much easier access to every kind of notetaking functionality (audio recording, camera snapshot, etc.) Browsing by notebooks and tags has been made significantly easier, too.

As always, it's better to just download the new version and try it out. Or, if you prefer, watch the video after the break, or even flick through the gallery below.

VeriFone puts money near mouth, says it'll include NFC in all new POS terminals

Well, here's a bold step forward for NFC -- payment solution provider Verifone says its new batch of point-of-sale terminals will come standard with the touch-to-pay wireless technology. That's the word from Near Field Communications World, who quizzed the company just a few days after CEO Douglas Bergeron called on the payments industry to foot the NFC bill, saying "The retail point of sale represents a point of convergence for smartphone-initiated payments, social networking and electronic couponing, but it won't happen if retailers are expected, on faith, to absorb the costs of making it work." Sounds like a company that's very keen on letting us pay by swiping our phone. Unfortunately, he didn't say when such technology might roll out.

WordPress.com hit by massive DDoS attack

wordpress ddosDDoS attacks aren't entirely uncommon nowadays, but the scale of the attack against WordPress.com is truly staggering. CEO Matt Mullenweg told TechCrunch that the attack has affected all three of the company's data centers -- which are located in Chicago, Dallas, and San Antonio. The sites were being blasted by tens of millions of packets (and multiple Gigabits) per second.

Mullenweg says the attacks have been neutralized for now and notes that Automattic is taking precautionary steps to avoid possible aftershocks. As for the cause of the attacks, Mullenweg speculates that they "may have been politically motivated against one of our non-English blogs but we're still investigating and have no definitive evidence yet."

You can check on the current status of the WordPress service on its Public Website Health status page.

From Windows 1 to Windows 7, and everything in between, in just 10 minutes (video)

Windows 1 to 7, the complete upgrade process
If you've ever wanted to see, in 10 short minutes, the evolution of simple, glorious MS-DOS Shell and Windows 1, to the lofty, shiny, 3D peaks of Windows 7, with every version (except Windows Me) in between, now's your chance.

With the title 'Chain of Fools,' the video (embedded after the break) chronicles one man's attempt to upgrade Windows from one version to the next, from Windows 1 to Windows 7. The idea is to see how well Windows deals with the upgrade process -- whether settings and UI preferences are preserved -- and to see how well later versions of Windows deal with very old games (Doom 2 and The Secret of Monkey Island).

The complete upgrade process, if you're interested, is as follows:
MS-DOS 5 > Windows 1 > Windows 2 > Windows 3 > Windows 3.1 > Windows 95 > Windows 98 > Windows 98 SE > Windows 2000 (NT!!) > Windows XP SP2 > Windows Vista > Windows 7. Windows Me, may it forever burn in hell, isn't included as its upgrade is mutually exclusive with Windows 2000.

Even if you're not a fan of Windows, it's worth watching just to see footage of Windows 1 and 2, which are both quite rare. The results of the upgrade processes surprised us, too -- it's fantastic to see how many legacy applications from Windows 3 survived to Windows 7, and remained operational!

Mac OS X Lion: the multi-touch offspring of Windows 7 and iOS

Windows 7 OS X Lion
Yesterday, Apple released the developer preview of Mac OS X Lion, the first major update to OS X since August 2009. Two major things have uprooted the computing world since then: the launch of Windows 7 in October 2009, and the iPad in 2010.

It's no surprise, then, that OS X Lion looks like the lovechild of Windows 7 and iOS. White box-thumping purists will claim, somehow, that this is revolutionary, world-changing, pivotal. Realists will acknowledge that, for the first time in at least a decade, Apple might be following Microsoft's lead.

Hyperbole aside, though, we should be excited: more than anything, OS X Lion is a glimpse of the future of tablet computing.

Pesky Nose-Cone Problem Downs NASA's Glory Satellite

A second high-profile failure in two days has helped make a bona-fide rough week for NASA. The U.S. space agency's Glory atmospheric research mission satellite crashed into the Pacific Ocean Friday, one day after a faulty o-ring caused a space suit leak on board the Shuttle Discovery. A so-called "nose cone fairing" that protects the enclosed satellite "did not separate as expected about three minutes after launch," said NASA spokesperson Steve Cole.

J.D. Power: Verizon has best call quality nationwide, T-Mobile consistently below average

J.D. Power, that well known arbiter of human opinion in the United States, has just released its latest study on customer satisfaction with wireless carriers. It addresses such things as (the lack of) dropped calls, failures to connect, voice distortion, echoes, static, and late-arriving text messages, and ultimately churns out a rating out of five stars relative to the regional average and other carriers. In testing done between July and December last year, Verizon had the best or tied for the best satisfaction ratings in five of the six studied areas, while AT&T and Sprint traded blows for second and T-Mobile had to admit defeat as the laggard of the top four. US Cellular managed to score highest in the North Central region, but J.D. Power's overall assessment isn't very rosy for any of the carriers -- the stats collector says growing smartphone usage, heavy texting and more indoor calls are collectively causing call quality to stagnate, and even warns that "increased adoption of smartphones and wireless tablets may continue to compromise the quality of network service."
