Firefox 4 gets Windows 7 taskbar auto-pinning

Mozilla's Robert Strong has published a blog post which calls out a subtle yet significant change in recent Firefox 4 beta builds. Firefox will now automatically pin itself to the Windows 7 taskbar if you set it as your default browser during installation.

Strong finds it odd that Windows 7 doesn't do this automatically. After all, Microsoft does pin Internet Explorer to the taskbar -- except, of course, on Windows 7 N builds where IE isn't included. He's not happy about having to implement the change in Firefox, either. He posts, "It kind of pisses me off that it was considered important enough to have a browser front and center pinned to the task bar on Win7 but it wasn't considered important enough to do this for the browser that the users of Win7 have explicitly chosen to use."

Nokia Kills Symbian, Teams Up With Microsoft For Windows Phone 7

Microsoft and Nokia announced a partnership Friday that will pair Microsoft’s less-than-successful Windows Phone 7 OS with Nokia’s flagging handset business. The move is a dramatic shift for the Finnish handset maker, which is completely abandoning what is still the market-leading, albeit declining, mobile phone operating system. But it is not surprising: In his now-infamous [...]

Switching to Mac? There's an app for that

For a limited time only, you can get your hands on Learn the Switch to Mac for just $0.99 -- from the Mac App Store, of course. The app is designed for simpleton Windows types that lack the requisite cranial capacity to understand the Macintosh's complex and mysterious user interface.

Learn the Switch to Mac is basically a series of screencast video tutorials that walk you through each of Mac OS X's features, from using Finder and iChat, through to setting up Time Machine and manipulating Spaces. You are guided by the disembodied head of Saied, your personal instructor, who for some reason isn't wearing a Jobsian black sweater. To aid with the switching, Saied first focuses on the similarities and differences between Windows and Mac, and then pushes on with Mac-specific features.

For the sheer number of video tutorials that the app includes, it's surely worth 99 cents. Whether you're a new Macite looking for enlightenment, or you're holding the hand of a new convert, just buy it -- what've you got to lose?

Incidentally, according to TUAW, the price will eventually rise to $24.95, though there's no details of when the increase will actually occur. There's a video of Learn the Switch to Mac after the break.

Microsoft removes Autorun from Windows Vista, XP, 2000

Last night, on Patch Tuesday, Microsoft distributed a security fix that disables Autorun with USB drives and other forms of removable storage on Windows Vista, XP and 2000, and Server 2008 and 2003. Windows 7 by default has Autorun disabled for removable storage, so this is just bringing the older OSes into line.

This marks the end of an era, at least as far as worms like Conficker are concerned. Historically, all a virus had to do was place a a very basic Autorun.inf file in the root of a removable drive, and it would be automatically executed upon its insertion. As you can imagine, this was a very, very easy attack vector, and incredibly effective too.

Incidentally, because Microsoft says it hasn't seen an in-the-wild malware attack that uses CDs or DVDs, AutoPlay will still work with "shiny media."
