Foursquare Saw Over 200,000 Super Bowl Check-Ins ? A Record; Packers Fans Dominated

As we noted last week, Foursquare decided to experiment with a new feature for Super Bowl Sunday: Promoted Venues. Specifically, they created a "Super Bowl Sunday" worldwide venue that anyone could check-in to to let others know that they were watching the Super Bowl. So how did it go? Well, when it wasn't crashing the network, really well! Foursquare has a post today detailing the experiment. Apparently, there were over 200,000 check-ins on Super Bowl Sunday from all around the work. In fact, as we suspected, it became the most checked into venue ever ? and it took just four hours for that feat to happen. Foursquare also says that it was the largest online check-in event of all time.

Qualcomm gets official with TouchPad-powering Snapdragon APQ8060 processor

HP already put out the first official word about Qualcomm's new Snapdragon APQ8060 processor yesterday when it revealed that its TouchPad was based on it, but Qualcomm's now also come out and properly announced the new processor itself. That's, of course, a dual-core processor, and comes paired with an Adreno 220 GPU that Qualcomm says helps to deliver "unprecedented processing and 3D graphics performance." What's more, while the TouchPad is the first device to use the processor, it obviously won't be the last, and Qualcomm has now also given us an idea of what sort of capabilities those devices (including smartphones in addition to tablets) might have -- namely, cameras up to 16 megapixels, and the ability to capture and display 1080p stereoscopic 3D video or 8 megapixel stereoscopic still images. Head on past the break for the complete press release.

The Onion Speaks To Every Fanboy?s Fear: With Jobs Out, A Grotesque MacBook

When Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced he was taking another medical leave of absence earlier this year, the talk immediately started. "But what happens when Apple has to release a new product?" "Will it suck?" The truth, of course, is that Apple has a pipeline of products that likely spans years ? all based on calls made while Jobs was in charge. And many of those are already in various levels of late-stage development. But what if a new products slips through the cracks? What if interim Apple head Tim Cook greenlights something awful? The Onion explores this possibility today. Say hello to the new "grotesque" MacBook.

Angry Birds Rio: Rovio secures silver screen tie-in with animated film Rio

Rovio has just announced its first big-money commercial tie-in with upcoming film Rio -- which, rather unsurprisingly, is a film about birds. With the imaginative title Angry Birds Rio, the new game will have a story that revolves around the characters from the film (which comes from the makers of Ice Age!)

It's an all-new game with 45 levels, and it will be available on "smartphones and tablets worldwide." Despite making its debut on the PS3 and PSP, there's no mention of the Angry Birds Rio coming to consoles. The trailer is after the break -- and it's worth watching just for the first few seconds. The game will arrive sometime in March.

In other news, there'll also be a Valentine's Day version of the game. The backgrounds are pink, the birds are pink, and the pigs' defenses are pink. How adorable. Oh, and apparently there's also plans for an animated Angry Birds TV show. Very few details are known as yet, but of course, your trusty Bird Squad will apprise you of any new information.

[Some random trivia: the main character of the film, Blu, is voiced by
Jesse Eisenberg -- who played Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network.]

Carrot is a soothing time-waster featuring bunnies and puppies

Carrot gameSo... you've got a cute pet rabbit, and rabbits like carrots. That makes Carrot rabbit heaven, if there is such a thing: The game takes place on a long, lush lawn, with a line of carrots stretching into the distance, as far as the eye can see. Mmmm, carrots.

But of course, this wouldn't be much of a game if you were just running along, eating carrot after carrot. That wouldn't be very challenging. That's where the dogs come in: For every carrot, you have a puppy running back and forth across the screen.

If your bunny hits a dog, it's going to blink (and that, as we all know, means "ouch"). If it hits too many dogs, you lose. But your bunny can't move left or right, and it can't even move faster or stop!

So what do you do? You leash the dogs, of course. Basically, when you click a dog and drag it, a leash appears and the dogs is drawn to wherever you drag. There's a bit of a lag due to the leash being elastic, but if you're fast enough, you can keep the dogs from touching the rabbit.

There are also neat power-ups: You may notice my bunny has a rotor in the screenshot; the rotor lets it fly smoothly over the dogs, and it still somehow manages to eat the carrots. Of course, it doesn't last forever, and eventually the bunny lands and you have to keep leashing the dogs.

All in all, a very cute game, with a lovely soundtrack to boot.

Microsoft's Paralyzing Windows Fixation

While thinking about the hoopla that's sure to accompany the long-awaited release of the Verizon iPhone later this week, one question kept popping into my head: Is Microsoft missing out on the mobile computing movement? The company that popularized the graphical user interface, thus making personal computers accessible to the masses, has yet to deliver a truly successful mobile product.
