Hamster-powered miniature Strandbeest proves that sometimes, cute is a gadget

Sometimes, after a hard day of gadget blogging, you just want to sit down at your terminal and watch a funny, heart-warming video of a hamster running furiously (as they will) in a plastic ball attached to a Strandbeest traveling across a table to the delight of watching children. Right? Video is after the break.

Land of the Rising Bloom [Coffee]

Something you probably didn't know: A lot of the most fetishized coffee gear over the last few years has come out of Japan. You know, Japan, land of Sony. Another reason associating Italy or Europe with the vanguard of coffee culture is an out-of-date notion. [NYT] More »

Crosstalk for webOS enables easy Wi-Fi file sharing between devices

HP is holding a big webOS shindig tomorrow, and we're hoping that means the release of webOS 2 for the original Pre, Pre Plus and Pixi is imminent. Why? Because it means all webOS users will get to enjoy some slick, new apps like Crosstalk.

Designed for the new OS, Crosstalk enables users to share files from their webOS devices with nearby friends (who also happen to be using a webOS 2 device). Fire up the app, tap "friends near me," and then tap Share to get the ball rolling. Your pals can then download media stored on your device via your Wi-Fi network.

Crosstalk is a homebrew app, so you won't find it in the App Catalog. Instead, you'll need to use webOS Quick Install (WOSQI) -- but developer Jason Robitaille recently added webOS 2+ support to the app, so it's ready to push all the homebrew apps you can throw at it onto your HP/Palm hardware.

Check out the video after the break to see Crosstalk for webOS in action!

Google offers $20,000 for successful Chrome hack at Pwn2Own 2011

Google isn't just bringing the Chrome Browser to Pwn2Own 2011 -- this time, it's also bringing its own hardware. The Cr-48 Chrome OS laptop will be on hand for the browser exploiting hullabaloo, and Google is offering $20,000 and a CR-48 notebook for a successful exploit. According to the event's organizer, the attacker will also need to escape Chrome's sandbox. At last year's event, prominent researcher Charlie Miller said that's no easy task, so we're very curious to see whether someone will succeed this time around.

Offering cash for exposing vulnerabilities isn't anything new for Google, of course. The Big G just paid one developer $7,500 for finding a trio of vulnerabilities in Chrome back in January.

Philips Norelco SensoTouch 3D Electric Razor Review

Back in high school and a majority of college, I used the Norelco 885RX electric razor you see in the middle of the picture below (I agree, I could not believe I still had it as well). It was well used and dying quickly. In my junior year, I was given the sterling silver straight [...]

GNOME 3 Shell now available to test in SUSE and Fedora Live image format

GNOME Shell, the skin on top of the upcoming GNOME 3 desktop manager, can now be easily and safely tested by simply burning a Live CD, making a bootable USB stick, or simply mounting an image in VirtualBox. Fedora, ahead of GNOME 3's adoption in version 15 of the distro, wants people to alpha test with a live image of Rawhide; or if you're not a fan of Fedora, there's also a SUSE-based GNOME 3 Live image.

Both flavors will let you test the upcoming and much-anticipated release of GNOME 3 and Shell without meddling with your current OS -- and you can try it out, irrespective of whether you're currently a Linux users or not.

I've successfully opened both live image ISOs in VirtualBox, so you don't even need to reboot to try out GNOME 3 -- hooray!

MySpace for sale, News Corp has given up

According to COO Chase Carey, "The new MySpace has been very well received by the market and we have some very encouraging metrics. But the plan to allow MySpace to reach it's full potential may be best achieved under a new owner." That statement pretty much makes it official: the guy with the awesome mustache is looking for someone to buy MySpace.

The news comes as MySpace continues to struggle with the new social networking landscape, where it has been lingering in the ominous shadow of Facebook. Even after MySpace completed a much-needed redesignand then laid off 50% of its staff, parent company News Corp. still isn't satisfied with the financial picture at the site. News Corp. is considering other options as well -- including bringing new investors on board -- but a sale certainly seems like the option they'd be most happy about.

CorelDRAW tutorial: Trace, vectorize and modify a simple logo (video)

coreldrawtutorial
This is the second CorelDRAW tutorial in a series of four. Last week we looked at how to make a Polaroid-like image, and this week I'd like to show you how to vectorize a simple logo. I use the Android logo in the video, but you can do this with pretty much any logo other simple graphic.

There are many reasons why you might like to vectorize an existing logo. Perhaps you need to modify it, integrate it into a larger design, or generate a high-res printout. As you can see in the video, there's not much you can do with the low-res Android logo Google gives you. If your bitmap logo is large enough, you might be able to use CorelDRAW's auto-trace capabilities and simply generate a good vector outline of it. However, since the bitmap I selected was so small (and simple), I opted to use a completely manual tracing method - I just recreated the Android logo using a few simple shapes.

Rather than wax poetic about what the video contains, if you're curious to see the Android logo dissected and recreated in full vector glory, just watch the video after the jump.
