WSJ: iPad 2 Is in Production and It's Thinner, Lighter and Faster [Unconfirmed]

We've gone over this before: It's been pretty obvious that a new iPad should be coming out soon and that it'll most likely be thinner, lighter, and faster than the current model. Now the WSJ has an anonymous source confirming all those things and making suggestions that the next generation Apple gadget will have a front-facing camera and a display similar to the current model's. Worms brings classic trajectory warfare to webOS

While those of us with first generation webOS devices like the Palm Pre and Pixi wait for our shiny, new OS to arrive, it helps to have some diversions on hand to help pass the time. Chances are good you already picked up Angry Birds, but now there's a another addictive, trajectory-based game ready to devour your free time in the App Catalog: Worms.

Yes, Electronic Arts has brought the classic team combat game to webOS in all its cartoony glory. Loads of new characters and goodies have been added, and Worms is still every bit as enjoyable today as it was when first arrived back in 1995. For just $2.99 in the App Catalog, Worms for webOS is well worth picking up.

Check out the demo video after the break to see what you're in for!

Tachyon XC HD helmet camera review

When last we saw a Tachyon XC helmet cam it was clinging futilely onto the side of another, stuck together so that the footage coming from the two could be combined to create 3D -- something GoPro is now trying to do much more expensively. We weren't particularly convinced at the time, largely in part because the resolution of each of those XC cameras was only VGA. Now there's an HD model we've been given to try, and while we've happily ditched the Siamese action to go solo this time, some issues remain here that keep us from giving the new, $179.99 Tachyon XC HD our universal recommendation.

How to install non-Market applications on Android

android
This week's tips series is all about Android, highlighting some the operating system's built-in utilities, and better ways of getting stuff done. For other technology tips, check our Tips index.

When an Android user wants to install a new application, they usually just fire up the Market app, search for it, and install it with a couple of well-aimed button taps.

There are times, however, when you may want to load a non-Market application. For example, a perfectly good application may get banned from the market, but still be available from its original publisher.

By default, Android doesn't let you install non-Market apps due to the security risks involved (not to imply that the Market is entirely devoid of malicious apps...). To tell Android you're a big boy (or girl) and can take care of yourself, do this:

1) Go to Settings > Applications
2) Check the box next to Unknown sources
3) Confirm that you understand the risks

That's it! You are now free to install any application, even if it didn't come from the market. Just be careful!

CorelDraw video tutorial: Pulling in photos and clip art from the Web

corelconnect
This is the fourth (and final) of our CorelDRAW video tutorials. You can watch the others by browsing the CorelDRAW tag.

When creating a vector image or a composition, you don't always have to re-invent the wheel. After all, it is more than likely that whatever it is you're trying to do has been done before, at least in part. Using existing images or clip art ("media assets" in business parlance) can greatly speed up your work, and even improve the overall look of the image you produce.

To this end, I've chosen to create a video showing Corel Connect. It's a media search engine that comes with CorelDRAW, and helps you pull in images from Flickr, Fotolia, iStockphoto, and of course, your local hard drive and CorelDRAW's own clip art repositories.

Corel Connect ties in very tightly with CorelDRAW itself, and also does a nice job of protecting the original creator's rights so you don't "forget" to license whatever content you're using. See for yourself after the jump!

Verizon iPhone?s Chipset Hints at Unified Network Support

Hardware geeks have carefully dissected the Verizon iPhone to dig up its secrets. Repair company iFixit pried open the iPhone and found that it uses the same Qualcomm chipset as the Droid Pro “World Phone.” That means this chipset is capable of supporting both GSM and CDMA, which means Apple might unify Verizon and AT&T iPhones [...]

How to check how readable your Microsoft Word document is

Readability
This week's series of tips will be focusing on handy little features for Microsoft Excel and Word. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.

If you use difficult words, your documents will be difficult to read and understand. That's a fairly basic statement; fortunately, there have been several smart people who took this statement and created formulas that help you quickly see how readable your document is.

It turns out Microsoft Word can be made to show "readability statistics" using these formulas. This could help you write simpler, clearer text, and hit the level of comprehension you're trying to reach. Here's how to enable readability statistics in Word 2010:

  • Click the File tab, and then click Options
  • Click Proofing
  • Under When correcting spelling and grammar in Word, make sure Check grammar with spelling is selected.
  • Select Show readability statistics
(These instructions come from Microsoft's documentation, where you can find similar instructions for Outlook, too.)

Once readability statistics are enabled, run a spell check on your document. At the end of the spell check you'll get a new dialog with all sorts of interesting numbers, such as average sentences per paragraph, words per sentence, and characters per word. You will also get three different readability grades, which you can use to easily judge your document's level.
