Nokia Bubbles lets you intelligently unlock your N8 in a pop

Nokia Bubbles lets you intelligently unlock your N8 in a pop
The humble unlock screen gets ever fancier, and Nokia Bubbles is one of the fanciest we've seen yet. Like a variety of aftermarket lock screens it enables you to control your media player or initiate calls before you even unlock your handset, but does so in an interesting way. You just grab the bubble for what you want and drop it on what you want to do. A simple unlock entails dragging the key onto the lock, and if you have a missed call you can grab that person's bubble and drag it to a phone to call them right back. Grab the music bubble to go straight to the music player and, well, you get the picture. Okay, so it's not quite as much fun as playing Puzzle Bobble, but it is ever so slightly more useful. Check it out in the video below, or go ahead and give it a download if you're on Symbian.

[Thanks, pyry]

IP addresses are about to run out. Will the world end?

According to one IPv6 provider, we are now just days away from the IPv4 ARPAgeddon, or IPocalypse [not to be confused with the iPocalypse].

With IPv4 providing only 4.3 billion addresses, we all knew that the end of the reckless and fancy-free Internet era was coming -- we just didn't know when. The death knell has started to ring. Asia is on its knees plaintively pleading for its fix of IP addresses. Smartphones, the fastest growing market, will soon be unable to connect to the Internet. You might turn on your desktop PC, only to be told that you need to wait for an IP address to become available.

In short, it's now high time to consider our options.

Slash Boom is a fun, easy physics time waster

slashboom
Slash Boom is one of the easier time-wasters I've played recently, but I still enjoyed it. The rules are very simple: Your goal is to blow most of the structure off the screen. At each level, you get two "slashes" and one "boom". The "slashes" are click-and-drag motions you make across the structure, which cut it. Once you've placed two strategic cuts, it's time for the "boom": simply click anywhere on the screen to strategically detonate a bomb.

You can either click on the structure itself or next to it; if you placed your "slashes" strategically enough and picked a good spot for the bomb, a significant chunk of the structure will fly off the screen.

You will probably fly through the first few levels, but then the shapes become a bit more complex, and the game gets harder. I like it that they made the game harder by making more "difficult" shapes, rather than just making them larger (and thus more difficult to explode off the screen).

Bottom line: It's a quick, fun brain-teaser.

Avast 6 beta buffs up free antivirus with better sandboxing, new Web protection

It may have taken a long time for Avast to move from version 4 to 5, but that's not going to be the case with Avast 6. A beta version has been made available for download, and there are plenty of new features that will make Avast 6 a worthy antivirus program for Windows.

Two technologies which were introduced in paid editions of Avast 5 -- the Web Script Shield and site blocking -- have been made added to the free version of Avast 6. A new Web reputation plug-in has been added which adds Web of Trust-like functionality to both Firefox and Internet Explorer (including IE9). Paid version also include a new virtualized "SafeZone" designed to better secure sensitive data transmitted to the Web -- such as details provided during online banking sessions or checkout.

Avast 6 also improves its sandboxing abilities with a new feature that automatically isolates suspicious applications as soon as they are executed. The sandbox itself has been improved, though no specifics were given in the release post.
