Tiny $150 PC Fits in a Power-Plug

Globalscale’s DreamPlug looks to have the build-quality of a $5 card-reader from your local dime-store, complete with ill-fitting plastic panels and 1980s utility-chic color-scheme. But who cares? This is a tiny PC that is smaller than the average wall-wart, and sups just 5 watts of power – the same as a USB port supplies. The DreamPlug [...]

Untethered iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak Live

With the new Wi-Fi hot-spotting feature in the Verizon iPhone which ? will almost certainly be coming to GSM iPhones ? there’s one less reason to jailbreak your device. Sharing your 3G connection with your laptop or Wi-Fi-only iPad was possibly the number-one goal of jailbreakers. Still, that hasn’t stopped the hackers, and the latest way [...]

Motorola teases the real Xoom Super Bowl ad: George Orwell, flowers, iPhone-using automatons in white hoodies all involved

We already got teased on this, but it turns out that the first teaser -- which, let's be honest, didn't have the highest production value -- was strictly a teaser. Now, Motorola's sent us a fragment of the real commercial they'll be debuting during the Super Bowl this Sunday, and it's got pretty much everything you'd expect: a handsome gentleman with flowers reading 1984 on a Xoom, white headphones, and thousands of emotionless drones "enjoying" their Apple products. The whole thing is an obvious swipe at Apple for seemingly endorsing the very homogeny it waged war against in its Ridley Scott-directed Super Bowl commercial for the Macintosh back in 1984, and we suspect you good folks are going to have some very strong opinions about it. Follow the break for the first 15 seconds of the ad.

Motorola Xoom coming to Best Buy on February 24th, HTC Thunderbolt on the 14th

We're already fatigued of reporting launch dates for devices announced at this year's CES -- it seems like each one has had at least four different potential release points -- but when you get one of Best Buy's official Facebook pages blabbing about when the Moto Xoom and HTC Thunderbolt will be arriving... well, you sum up the strength to do it one more time. Contrary to earlier insider leaks pinning the Xoom to a February 17th launch, Best Buy is now promising to have the vanguard of the Honeycomb tablet revolution on February 24th. That's exactly a week later than our earlier info, so perhaps somebody somewhere decided to push things back a bit. We have no doubt, however, that Motorola is nearly ready with its slate -- there have been plenty of them spotted around the Super Bowl this week. In the meantime, HTC's LTE-equipped 4.3-incher seems to have finally settled down on Valentine's Day as its time of reckoning, a day after the similarly sized Inspire 4G hits AT&T.

Multinational Startups: The Future Or A Doomed Idea? (TCTV)

In our second segment with Ankur Jain of the Kairos Society, we talk about the idea of multinational startups. A lot of startups like to say they are "global from day one," but typically that's just marketing. Most of the startups I know who have tried to be truly global from day one-- focusing explicitly on several big markets at once with co-founders spread around the globe-- have said later they didn't recommend it. Many entrepreneurs would argue there is just something about facetime, coding in the same room, and building a project physically together that is core to how a startup works and a culture is built. After all, it's hard to be nimble when you're navigating cultural, language and time-zone chasms. Nevertheless, Jain thinks it's the future. He explains why in the video below.

Balls in Space is an addictive retro platformer -- Time-Waster

ballsinspace
Let me start of by saying there's nothing NSFW about Balls in Space; I mean, not that playing any Flash game is very "safe for work", but Balls in Space isn't NSFW in that way, if you know what I mean (hint hint, nudge nudge, say no more!).

Now that we've got that out of the way, let me tell you about the game: You're a ball. On your own, you can run and jump, and that's about it. But as with good platformers, power-ups abound. Specifically, you collect little balls along the way which you can shoot out at the baddies. The balls don't go in a straight line - they're subject to gravity, and they bounce off walls and barriers.

Another handy power-up is the Ninja, which lets you execute double-jumps. With these (and perhaps a couple of others which I have yet to uncover) you basically need go through the levels, kill the baddies, and get to the door every time. A few minutes into the game you'll find a nice homage to the Mario franchise, too. Quite a fun little game!

Android Market Web Store finally released, better pricing controls and in-app purchases coming to Market

The Android Market Web Store has finally been released -- you can access it right now: http://market.android.com/

It's very similar to AppBrain, but you can purchase apps directly from the Web -- and push apps directly to your phone.

Additional features of the Web Store:

  • Lots of developer control to make app pages look attractive
  • The page is laid out intelligently, with links to other apps by the developer, screenshots of the app -- in essence, it's just like any other App Store
  • Sharing tools are built-in -- easy to send apps to friends, via Twitter, email
  • If you open a Web Store link on your phone, it opens the Market -- genius!
  • You can sort apps in a variety of ways -- compatibility (2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc.), popularity, and so on
  • You can see all of your installed/purchased apps -- just like AppBrain
Better monetization features are coming, too. In-app payments are coming -- and the whole 'buying something in another currency' issue will be alleviated with "Buyer Currency Support." (I'm not exactly sure how this will help, but it sounds like it will prevent those nasty cross-currency charges and exchange rates that those of us in Europe have been enjoying.)

There are some screenshots of in-app purchases, and Tap Tap Revenge for Android, after the break.

Bing caught copying search results from Google

Bingle
In a case of Internet espionage that makes the antics of double agent Cold War operatives seem like frivolous child play, Bing has been caught stealing search results from Google with its Bing toolbar and IE8's Suggested Sites feature.

Google first suspected foul play in May 2010. By October 2010, with Bing results beginning to look uncannily like Google's, it knew something had to be done about it -- and so, in true, nerdtastic style, Google set up a sting to prove that Microsoft was actually behind the wholesale mimicry of Google's search results.

Google injected "synthetic" results into its search engine -- fake queries and results that no real user or engine would ever generate. Then, on D-Day, December 17, about 20 Google engineers were asked to run the test queries with Internet Explorer 8, Bing Bar and Suggested Sites. By December 31, some of these fake results began appearing on Bing. See the examples after the break -- it's damning.

For a full discussion of Bing's antics, and what repercussions Microsoft might have to face, read the original Search Engine Land post.
