Those Plastic Bread Ties Tell You What Day Your Bread Was Baked [Factoid]

I never knew those plastic clips that hold a bag of bread together actually had a purpose. The most commonly used system is the one above, where Blue, Green, Red, White, Yellow (alphabetical order) tell you which day it was actually baked, Monday through Saturday. Not every bread company does this, but next time you see it, you'll know which loaf is the fresh prince. [Wise Bread via Consumerist] More »

ControlCraft is a quick strategy game -- Time-Waster

controlcraft
Take Galcon Fusion, and imagine that instead of planets, you've got "barracks" spewing soldiers. Add funky background music and audio clips such as "Enemy down", "On my way Sir!", and you've got ControlCraft.

You start off the game with one set of "barracks" (a circle, basically - like a planet in Galcon) producing soldiers. There are empty circles on the map, but your enemy is moving fast to capture them. Each circle produces new troops at a given rate, so the more circles you control, the more soldiers you have to send against your enemy.

One interesting twist for ControlCraft is that there are some special barracks: There's a type that gives your soldiers "jet-pack" ability, and one that shoots rays out to destroy incoming units (i.e, the circle "defends itself"), but it doesn't create any units on its own. There's also an "armory" that upgrades your soldiers' weapons, and possibly some other goodies I haven't uncovered yet.

All in all, if you enjoy quick strategy games and like the odd military-themed game, this one's for you.

This Week's Best Android Apps [Apps]

Thrutu: When you're on a phone call, Thrutu puts a sliding drawer on top of your dialer to give you easy access to send pictures, contact info, location, etc. to the person you're talking to. It's quick and painless-just think about how many times you've tried to track down a phone number or explained directions on the phone, none of those situations would be as easy as just directly sending what you need. Only problems right now is that it doesn't work with CDMA Android phones (no simultaneous data and voice!) and both users need Thrutu. Free.

N64oid brings Nintendo 64 emulation to Android devices

There's not exactly a shortage of video game emulators for Android devices, but there has been one notable, 64-bit exception. That's finally been rectified with the just-released N64oid application, however, which finally brings emulation of Nintendo 64 games to the platform -- and, like the other emulators from developer Yongzh, it's conveniently available right in the Android Market (for $5.99). As you might expect, there are a few glitches and hiccups to be found even on high-end phones like the Nexus S, but it does seem to run remarkably well for an initial release and, as Download Squad points out, you can also use a separate, freely-available app to add some Wiimote controls to the proceedings. Also, it means you can play Goldeneye on your phone. Video after the break.

Chrome OS "panels" and Google Talk Chrome Web app go cross-platform

google talk web app for chrome
Back when we had the chance to play with some more mature builds of Chromium OS, one feature we particularly liked was its slick, panelized Google Talk funcationality. It later disappeared, replaced by a Gtalk app in the Chrome Web Store -- but while Google talks about 'the same platform everywhere,' the Gtalk Web app only worked on Chrome and Chromium OS.

What about all us Windows, Mac, and Linux users? Well, now we can get in on the action, too, even though the Chrome Web Store loudly proclaims ** THIS APP REQUIRES A CHROME NOTEBOOK **!

While that's not totally true anymore, you do need panel functionality, which your version of Chrome probably doesn't offer yet. However, if you have a recent Chromium build you can add the command line switch --enable-panels to enable basic panel functionality. There's no about:flags entry for this yet, so you'll have to use the switch for now. If you need help, just check our tutorial on how to add command line switches to Chrome.

Opera 11.10 adds more Speed Dial tweaks, Presto refinements

opera speed dial
Opera 11.10 Barracuda recently started baring its teeth, so to speak, revealing some subtle but welcome changes to the browser's trademark Speed Dial page. In its latest snapshot, further enhancements have been added.

You can now customize titles for your Speed Dial entries, and the page itself is zoomable -- making it easier to cram large numbers of pages onto a single screen for scroll-free, single-click access. There's also a new button which you can click to configure Speed Dial options, and you can choose to use a three, four, or five column layout.

The update also brings some improvements to the built-in email client and several enhancements to Opera 11.10's Presto rendering core. Check the release notes for a complete list of the changes in the latest version of Presto
