How to customize the Ribbon menu in Microsoft Office 2010

Ribbon
This week's series of tips will be focusing on handy little features for Microsoft Excel and Word. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.

While earlier this week I've shown you how to keep the Ribbon from getting in your way, that's not all you can do with it in Office 2010. Back when the Ribbon interface first came out, in Office 2007, it wasn't really customizable. You could modify it if you were lucky enough to know VBA (Visual Basic for Applications, Office's built-in programming language), but otherwise, you were pretty much stuck with the stock arrangement of tabs and buttons.

Fortunately, with Office 2010, Microsoft introduced a simple way to customize the Ribbon, requiring no programming at all. Simply go to the File menu, click Options and then select Customize Ribbon. You'll get a two-pane dialog, showing all available commands versus your existing ribbon, and letting you toggle things on and off and re-arrange them as you see fit.

The best part is that once you're done customizing your setup, you can easily export it for backup or to take with you to your other computers. Just click the Import/Export button and select Export all customizations.

Hotmail?s New Alias Feature Lets You Handle Multiple Addresses From The Same Inbox

Ever wished you could have multiple email addresses that all routed to the same inbox, without having to set up a bunch of different accounts and forwarding options? Hotmail ? yes, the email service you probably haven't looked at in years ? has just added a very handy new alias feature that lets you do just this. In other words, I can now setup a Hotmail inbox that lets me seamlessly handle correspondence to both jasonkincaid@hotmail.com and JediMasterJ@hotmail.com from the same inbox ? woohoo!* Aliases aren't anything new for webmail services. Hardcore Gmail users are probably familiar with the old '+' trick: if your email is jason@gmail.com, you can use a + symbol to create a variety of aliases that all go to the same place. For example, you might create jason+receipts@gmail.com, jason+deals@gmail.com, and so on ? each with a different filter to route the emails to different labels (or deletes them immediately). It's not perfect, but it works decently well.

EyeSight brings its gesture controls to Android tablets, Windows-based devices

EyeSight has been bringing its hand-waving UI to all sorts of mobile devices for some time now, and it's now expanded things yet again. Following up its launch on Android last summer, the company has announced that its gesture recognition software has now also been tailored specifically for Android tablets and other "computer-based" Android platforms, and it's announced that it's now available for Windows-based devices as well. As before, the software is able to work with just about any built-in camera, and the company says that it has been "highly optimized" for mobile platforms, with low CPU and memory requirements. It's not something available directly to users, though -- it's up to developers to license it and include the functionality in their applications. Head on past the break for an idea of how it works -- just try to ignore that conspicuously out of place iPad at the beginning of the video.

BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroen partner for future hybrid tech, put that Great War thing behind them

The last century saw no shortage of disputes between the French and the Germans, but in this century everything's going to be totally cool. BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroën, the company that quite naturally owns the Peugeot and Citroën marques, have come to form a partnership focused on the creation of advanced hybrid systems. The name for this new partnership? BMW Peugeot Citroën Electrification, quite naturally. The fruit of this holy union will be better battery packs, generators, and electronics that will not only help the manufacturers that have joined together here, but will also be sold to other manufacturers who need a little help from their friends. We'll have to wait a little while before we see any results, though: actual components aren't expected to hit the road until 2014 at the earliest -- coincidently about 100 years since things got awfully testy at Alsace-Lorraine.

What Happens When Wikipedia Edits Are Printed in Real Time? [Video]

An art installation for Wikipedia's 10th Anniversary party suspended 18 printers over a room. Why? The printers printed real time edits made to Wikipedia to show the physical record that Wikipedia's community leaves behind. Which is, lots and lots of edits. More »

Vuze 4.6 adds uTP support, speeds up torrent downloads

Vuze is a solid torrent downloader, especially for less-savvy users. Its built-in media streaming and transcoding features make it a nice start-to-finish app for downloading and playing videos on just about any device. With the release of version 4.6, Vuze has added even more playback kung-fu, as well as one very important piece of bittorrent support.

Both the free and plus versions of Vuze now download torrents in a more network-friendly way, thanks to uTP support (which first arrived in uTorrent back in 2008). Several code tweaks were also made which have resulted in faster downloads, and the Vuze Crew has also tidied up the sidebar, making it easier to access the features users lean on most. Less-used options have been tucked out of the way. Vuze Plus subscribers can also utilize the Play Now feature, which analyzes a video's download speed and bitrate and begins playing when Vuze can "safely begin continuous playback."

Vuze is a free download for Windows and Mac -- Vuze Plus will run you around will run you about $25 per year.
