Trend Micro thinks Android's open source makes it less secure than iOS; wrong!

Android eats apple
In an odd move that must surely raise concerns of lucidity, the Trend Micro chairman, Steve Chang, has claimed that the open-source nature of Android makes it easier to hack than iOS: "Android is open-source, which means the hacker can also understand the underlying architecture and source code."

News just in: the open-source-is-less-secure myth was dispelled more than a decade ago. Take a look at Linux, Apache, Firefox, or Chrome -- four huge open-source projects, and all many times more secure than their closed-source brethren (Windows, IIS, Internet Explorer). Open source projects are more secure than closed-source projects due to peer and code review, and vested interest! Trend Micro fails to appreciate that while maybe a handful of people have seen the iOS source, thousands have eyeballed Android's innards to look for bugs. Don't forget that Android is also based on Linux, which must be one of the most rigorously tested pieces of software ever made.

Later in the interview, Chang even goes on to mention the iOS sandbox "that isolates the platform"... which Android also has!

Anyway, Chang's ultimate point is that as smartphones become more intrinsic to our everyday life, their security becomes an ever-growing concern. Smartphones need to be treated as real computers, and locked down in the same way; either by the platform, or with third-party software. There will come a point, in the next few years, when smartphone OSes receive even more attention from malware authors than Windows -- we need to be ready.

Congress to broadcast opening day live on Facebook, later today

congress
Today the U.S. House of Representatives will be transitioning over to Republican control. To mark the event, the first speech by new House Speaker, congressman John Boehner, will be streamed live on the Pledge to America Facebook page.

You will be able to watch the proceedings live even if you don't have a Facebook account - the page is open and accessible to all, as befitting a democracy. Still, if for some reason you simply don't like Facebook, you can watch the screencast itself on Livestream, which will be doing the heavy lifting on the video part (the Livestream video is embedded into the Facebook page).

If you do elect to watch the video on Facebook, you'll be able to comment on the page while it is happening, and take a more direct part in the democratic process (or at least make some noise about it).

An Infrared Look at 123 Tons of Nuclear Waste Reveals a Hot Mess [Image Cache]

This infrared image shows railroad cars carrying 123 tons of nuclear waste. Don't worry about all that heat though, because according to nuclear energy and proliferation expert Matthew Bunn, it "doesn't mean anything in particular in terms of how dangerous [the waste] is." More »

Wine 1.3.11 released, improves JavaScript performance and localization, fixes MS Hearts bug

Wine HQ logoThe development version of Wine 1.3 has just been released, bringing with it a ton of bug fixes, improved JavaScript performance, and -- at long last -- GNU gettext support, making localization and translation a whole lot easier.

For many Linux users, though, Wine 1.3.11 will be known as the build that finally fixed MS Hearts, which has been broken under Wine since 2006. Of course, there is a Hearts clone, but it just isn't the same. The improved JavaScript performance means that JavaScript-heavy pages should run a bit better in Internet Explorer -- though why a Linux user would use Internet Explorer is truly a puzzler.

Binary packages for Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and other major distros should be available; but if not, you can always build from source.

Nexus One gets tiny update to Android 2.2.2, fixes SMS routing issues

Not to be outdone by its Samsung successor, the Nexus One's getting a miniature over-the-air update as well, sending users on a mind-bending ride from Android 2.2.1 (version FRG83D) to the FRG83G build of Android 2.2.2. When they emerge thoroughly dazzled and confused on the other side, what will they find? We spoke to Google and it's just a few bug fixes, but one of them's rather important -- this update will go down in the annals of history as the one that doesn't inadvertently send humorous texts intended for your co-workers to your deathly serious boss. Oh, and if that sounds like something you'd like to have immediately, rather than waiting for a formal rollout, you can find the file you need at Google's servers right now.

Scientists Crack Genetic Code for Rare Cancer That Beset Steve Jobs

Johns Hopkins University scientists have deciphered the genetic code for a rare type of pancreatic cancer -- neuroendocrine or islet cell tumor -- that Apple CEO Steve Jobs told the world he'd been diagnosed with back in 2004. The discovery explains many of the cancer's troubling, highly variable properties and suggests new treatment approaches.

Ubuntu 11.04 switches to LibreOffice in latest daily builds

Back in September 2010, when Google, Novell and others announced the LibreOffice fork of OpenOffice, Canonical frontman Mark Shuttleworth said "The Ubuntu Project will be pleased to ship LibreOffice from The Document Foundation in future releases." In recent 11.04 Natty Narwhal daily builds, the change has finally taken place.

Download yourself a new Ubuntu 11.04 daily build .ISO, and you'll have LibreOffice installed from the get-go -- no PPA required. Natty is currently in the early stages, of course, so expect a few bumps in the road if you decide to take it for a test drive.
