ADW.Launcher for Android hands on: attractive and highly customizable, but bloated

Sitting like rough and tawdry monarchs atop of the Android home screen and app launcher pile are LauncherPro and ADW.Launcher. We've reviewed Zeam Launcher, and looked at Go Launcher and QuickDesk, but somehow the two big boys have always escaped our critical eye. Well, no more!

Today we're going to look at ADW.Launcher. It's a free download, but there's an 'EX' version that will cost you about $3. It shares a lot of its features with Zeam -- and its looks are somewhat similar, too -- but ADW is a lot more customizable. There are also a healthy number of ADW themes from third party developers, which provide easy access to 'unique' and sexy home screens.

Right then! Roll up your pants, it's time to wade in.

Fujitsu unveils Esprimo FH99/CM, touts it as the world's first glasses-free 3D desktop

After seeing Sharp's 10.6 glasses-free 3D display last September, we left convinced that parallax barrier 3D technology was a long way off from being ready for prime-time, and then we reached for a bottle of aspirin. Demonstrations by Intel and Sony at CES this year proved, however, that a lot can change in four months, and we hope for Japan's collective eye sight that Fujitsu's Esprimo FH99/CM desktop PC follows this trend. That's because Fujitsu claims it's the world's first glasses-free all-in-one, and it's scheduled to launch in the country on February 25th with a whopping $3,100 price tag. All that dough will get buyers a naked-eye 23-inch full HD 3D display plus top-of-the-line features such as a Blu-ray drive with 3D Blu-ray support, a 2Ghz Core i7 processor, 4GB of memory, a 2TB hard drive, and two USB 3.0 ports. There's no word whether the computer will land stateside, but if it doesn't, Toshiba has hinted they could fill the void with a glasses-free 3D PC of its own by late 2011. Still, we wouldn't recommend stomping your 3D glasses just yet.

Akai's iPad-docking SynthStation 49 and updated app: eyes-on at NAMM 2011

Remember when everything had an iPhone dock? The coming dock revolution will be just like that, but a lot more massive. Akai is showing off a non-functioning version of its SynthStation 49-key MIDI controller at NAMM this weekend, and it's pretty much the same idea as the smaller iPhone-docking Synthstation25. That said, here you've got nine velocity-sensitive MPC pads, a separate transport section, and 1/4-inch outs. And an adjustable iPad dock, which is a funny thing to see on a keyboard. Software-wise, this younger-bigger bro in the family will also support CoreMIDI -- and an updated version of Akai's SynthStation iOS app for the bigger screen, using the added real estate to allow finer, more direct control over the sound, along with a new recording section and simultaneous drum / synth sequencing. Not a bad piece of kit for the pad-centric musician in your life -- look for it to splash down this June for $199. Check below the break for video of the unit and a runthrough of the new software.

Inside the Chocolate Factory So Nerdy It's Controlled by an iPhone [Food]

8mm Vintage Cam App Gets Retro Charm Just Right

asvsdToday's high-tech gadgets are tomorrow's Goodwill drop-box contents, and they're the-day-after-tomorrow's two-buck iPhone apps. You can find this phenomenon at work in the App Store in the guise of old video games, old-timey-camera apps, or even a few apps that let you dial a number like an old rotary phone.

Flyde is a super-fast retro racing Time Waster

flyde
I liked Flyde from the moment I laid eyes on it. It reminded me of an anciet DOS game I used to play as a kid, where you had to race around in 3D and jump platforms while the level rushes by. [I totally played that game too -- anyone remember the name?! -Ed]

In Flyde there's no jumping per se: you control a white triangle that drives on or flies over a track made out of squares. There are colorful squares and black squares. The black squares are actually "holes" - when you drive over them, you fall into the abyss of space and die.

But it gets a little more complicated than just "not driving over the black squares". Instead of only one track, you have two tracks. When you drive over a square in the color of the other track, you switch tracks! The second track is above you, so when you switch, you're actually flying upside-down.

To keep from driving over the black squares, you have to continuously switch from track to track by touching the colorful squares. You're going pretty fast so navigating between those evil black squares and switching tracks just at the right moment is pretty challenging, and also a lot of fun.

The soundtrack consists of a robot with an attitude problem, but it also tells you how many points you've accumulated. This, along with nice electronic background music, makes Flyde a truly engaging time waster, even if you're not into retro gaming.

Oh, and don't judge me by the score in the screenshot. My top score is actually 12,610 - what's yours?

[Update: The old DOS game is called SkyRoads. Thanks, TnS! Awesome commenting there.]
