The best Windows Twitter clients: from TweetDeck to tweetc

With more than 190 million users, and less than half of those using Twitter.com to post updates, the installed Twitter client market is massive. There are literally hundreds of Twitter clients spanning every desktop and mobile platform, and even a few cross-platform Web apps thrown into the mix.

Even if you narrow down the search to just one platform -- Windows -- there's still a dizzying amount of choices to pick from. There isn't even an official Twitter for Windows that scared newbies can pick up.

Well, good news: We've whittled down the choices so that you only have to choose from the best of the rest. From the typographically beautiful and slimline MetroTwit, to the heavy-hitting tour de force of Seesmic, and a handful in between, we have a Twitter client for you.

Linux Mint 10 KDE released; Mint 11 based on Ubuntu 11.04, but no Unity

Mint 10 KDE
Just a few days after the emergence of a release candidate, Linux Mint 10 KDE has been released. There are a few bugs (most notably, VLC is slow to open files), so be sure to check the full release notes.

Mint, which claims to be the 4th most popular desktop operating system (behind Windows, OS X and Ubuntu), prides itself on its elegance and out-of-the-box ease-of-use. With version 10, the only significant change is the addition of KDE 4.6, but the Software Manager and Update Manager have also received numerous tweaks. Adobe Flash 10.2 'Square' also makes its first appearance with Mint 10.

If you want to give Mint 10 a go, be sure to grab it from one of the mirrors, or use the 32- or 64-bit torrents -- the Mint site itself seems pretty slow at the moment, probably because of Mint's massive popularity...!

As far as Mint 11 goes, we now know that it will be called 'Katya', based on Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, and released in May. Interestingly, Mint 11 will use neither GNOME Shell or Unity -- instead, it will use a traditional GNOME 3-based desktop layout.

Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread allows screenshots with no root required

android screenshot without rootUp until now, all the Android app screenshots you've seen floating around have been taken using either the Android SDK or third-party applications which require root access. That's because Android -- unlike webOS and iOS -- hasn't provided a simple way for users to capture images on their devices' screens.

According to Android Central, that has changed in Android 2.3.3. Rooting will no longer be required "because of some changes in the way the SurfaceFlinger service handles what it captures from the framebuffer." The non-geeky version: Android 2.3.3 isn't as stingy with allowing apps to intercept what's being displayed on the screen.

Their post also jokes that Android users can now give the raspberry to their WP7-toting friends, but let's remember this change is part of Android 2.3.3. Many devices don't have Android 2.2 yet, and even less have 2.3.X -- so it's going to be a while before root-free screenshots become the norm in the Android world.

Mozy announces sync apps for desktop, iOS and Android

Desktop-to-cloud backup provider Mozy has announced that it will soon release Mozy Sync, a file synchronization service like Dropbox or SugarSync. The company has also stated that Android and iOS apps will be available and that an invite-only beta is underway. You'll have to be a current MozyHome customer to be considered as a tester.

What's not spelled out is how the service will work. Will Mozy Sync be a value-add for Mozy's recently re-priced backup service? Will Mozy Sync be its own beast and require a separate subscription? We're hoping to receive early access and more details soon, and we'll fill in the blanks as soon as we can.

Verizon hosts its own iPad 2 notification portal, no last-minute mention of LTE to be found

We knew good and well that both Verizon Wireless and AT&T would be getting their own 3G iPad 2, and while the latter is still trumpeting the original iPad on its site, VZW has gone ahead and put up a placeholder for what's next. A scant four months after the first iPad hit Verizon airwaves (by way of a MiFi), the "thinner, lighter, faster and FaceTime-equipped" model is just around the bend -- complete with an embedded CDMA 3G module. Hit the source link if you'd like to be notified of updates, or just make sure to wake up on March 11th. Whatever's easier for you.

[Thanks, Aaron]

CorelDRAW video tutorial: Add detail to any image using the Mesh Fill tool

coreldraw
This is the third of four weekly CorelDRAW demos/tutorials. The previous two were about making a Polaroid-like image and vectorizing a simple logo.

This week's video is more of a simple demo than a tutorial: One of CorelDRAW's coolest features is the Mesh Fill. Those of you familiar with Adobe Illustrator will recognize the tool instantly: It allows you to add a great level of detail to otherwise simple vector objects. You can take a simple oval and make it into a photorealistic water droplet using nothing but the Mesh Fill tool.

This tool requires a great deal of practice to master - it's not a simple technique. Rather than attempt a complete drawing, I elected to simply show what it can do. If you've never used a vector drawing application before, this video will give you a good idea of what can be done using the Mesh Fill tool. Take the jump to watch the video.

Is This Uncanny Valley-Scaling Robot Proof Of Our Impending Demise?

Sweet merciful fates: this is a robot. Called a Geminoid, these things came into fame with an early version in 2005 by Prof. Hiroshi Ishiguro of ATR. This new version seems completely revamped and updated and, more interesting, this is the first Geminoid from outside of Japan. This new Geminoid comes from Aalborg University in Denmark and is considerably less complex - but much more realistic - than Ishiguro's original model. This one, called Geminoid-F, appears to really breathe and perform involuntary muscular reactions. Click through for video.
