Samsung CA750 wireless Central Station eyes-on

We heard a brief mention of Samsung's Central Station during its first press event, but it wasn't until we had a chance to check it out for ourselves on the floor did we really understand how the monitor / wireless docking station worked. Turns out it's thanks to a USB dongle that connects the laptop in question to the rest of the setup. A clever idea, for sure, but we'd definitely need to put it through the ringer before we'd suggest. The 23-inch and 27-inch models are coming in March with prices as-yet unspoken. Enjoy the pictures below!

Etymotic EB1 and EB15 earplugs hands-on

Etymotic, a company we've seen here at CES and in the past, has developed a pair of earplugs that protect your hearing against things like loud explosions and gunfire. The EB1 and EB15 Electronic Blast PLG Earplugs, retailing for $449 and $499, respectively, are aimed toward buyers such as hunters, musicians and soldiers -- folks who are exposed to loud noises and need protection. The analog earpieces are powered by a 312 hearing-aid battery and will last three weeks. There's no on/off switch -- just a high and low gain control. High gain is used for environments that require an amplification and the opposite applies for low gain. In other words, if a soldier is out on the battlefield and needs to hear an enemy inside a house, he'd switch to high gain to generate a louder sound. The difference between the plugs is simple: the EB1 is for people who are going to be around one-off noises and the EB15 are for those who are going to be exposed to prolonged noises. We got a chance to test out the plugs on the loud show floor and we gotta say, the difference between high- and low-gain modes is easily recognizable and we feel like these earplugs will make superb head-hole protectors. Plenty of complicated graphs and numbers in the gallery below.

DIY CNC Machine Just $390

Stephen McGloughlin took a look at current CNC machines and saw complex and hard-to-make devices that costs thousands of dollars to buy. So he decided to make his own. CNC machines are computer-controlled mills that allow you to accurately cut parts and components to make pretty much anything, from simple models to complex engines. McGloughlin opted [...]

Hotmail users lose entire email inboxes, Microsoft restores them 5 days later

Hotmail lost emailHotmail users have only just had their email inboxes restored after a few long, worrying days. The data loss began at the end of December, with the Windows Live Solution Center spawning over a thousand "help, my inbox is missing!" threads, and only now is posting beginning to dry up. The exact number of affected users is unknown, but could easily be in the millions.

Microsoft hasn't yet stated the cause of the massive data loss, but considering some users lost email inboxes spanning years, we should be glad that adequate backups were kept. The data loss occurred around December 28, and it affected everything in Hotmail accounts, including sent items. Some users reported that the only message they had been left with was the classic "Welcome to Hotmail" email.

Still, it seems like everything is now back to normal. Considering just how much data was lost, it was probably a crashed database server which then had to be restored -- but hopefully Microsoft will let us all know what really happened.

Update: Microsoft says that 17,355 accounts were affected by the outage, which was apparently caused by "mailbox load balancing between servers."

Apple drops iPhone 3GS to $49 on contract, we pretend the timing is coincidental

Hey, a phone that Apple introduced back in 2009 (that'd be the iPhone 3GS) is now selling -- brand new with a two-year voice / data agreement -- for $49, both at AT&T and through Apple directly. Of course, you could get the far more capable iPhone 4 for a fair amount more, or you could wait until tomorrow so you'd actually have an option when it comes to carriers. Your call, obviously.

iPhone 3G Hacked With Android 2.3 Runs Gingerbread Before Your Androidphone [Video]

From the same OpeniBoot software that saw other variations of Android running on the iPhone, comes Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), shown on the iPhone 3G. The video is a bit jerky, but it's proof that Gingerbread can be dual-booted. More »

Philips uWand hands-on

Philips has been touting its uWand "direct pointer" remote for a good while now, but we've never had the chance to actually use one ourselves. Today that omission has been rectified as we got our mitts around this motion / gesture-based controller and gave it a quick test drive. It works by having an infrared camera embedded in the front, which detects an IR beacon in your TV and thereby judges its own distance, tilt and relation to the TV. That then allows for things like motion-based zooming, pointing the remote at the particular thing on the television that you want to "click" on, and navigational shortcuts attached to gestures performed with this handheld. There's also a nice spacious keyboard on the back, assisting in the use of all these Smart TVs CES has been littered with. Philips' intention is to license the technology out to other manufacturers, which could result in consumer products by 2012 -- so yeah, it's not terribly close to your living room yet, but our gallery of images is.

Trillian for Android review -- not quite worth your money yet

Trillian logoEarlier this week, Trillian, one of the oldest third-party IM client developers, released its Android app. I've always found Trillian a bit gimicky -- kind of like a 'Super Mega' Windows Live Messenger, with more bells and whistles than I really need, and a bloated, hard-to-navigate UI as a result.

Trillian for Android, I'm sad to say, is no better. Ultimately, it's functional but it feels like the shedding of its beta moniker was more than a little hasty. If that wasn't bad enough, it'll cost you $5 from the Android Market.
