iTunes Remote for Windows Phone 7 controls playlists, volume, and multiple libraries

Just because you picked up a new Windows Phone 7 device doesn't mean you're using Zune to manage your desktop audio collection. If iTunes is your app of choice, head over to the Zune Marketplace and take a look at iTunes Remote for Windows Phone 7.

The mobile app gives you complete control over iTunes playback once you've paired it with your computer using the free desktop pairing software. In addition to showing you what's currently playing, iTunes Remote also lets you browse and search your collection. All the playback controls you'd expect are offered -- you can pause, resume, skip, stop, and adjust the volume. iTunes Remote also supports multiple libraries, so you can control playback from as many iTunes instances as you please.

iTunes Remote for Windows Phone 7 sells for $1.99 in the Zune Marketplace.

BleachBit privacy app gets a big upgrade, offers nice alternative to CCleaner

BleachBit -- the open source system clean-up utility for Windows and Linux -- has added several new features to its latest version that make it an even better tool for removing unneeded files files from your computer. Support for Google Chrome and Chromium has been greatly improved: BleachBit can now remove everything from DNS prefetch data, to autofill history and DOM storage. Support for HTML5 localStorage cleaning has also been improved and now works with Opera.

On Linux systems, BleachBit can now remove swap files (in addition to swap devices). The Windows version has added the option to remove Windows Update uninstallers -- including hotfixes and Internet Explorer patches. BleachBit's list of supported programs has also grown significantly since we last wrote about the program, and it's well worth checking out the full list of features to see just how much digital crud it can remove from your hard drive.

Amazon Kindle for Windows Phone 7 now available

After having announced plans to deliver tablet-specific versions of their Kindle app for both Android and Windows earlier today, Amazon's Windows Phone 7 app has quietly appeared in the Zune Marketplace. As is the case with Kindle on other mobile platforms, Kindle for WP7 supports in-app purchases from Amazon's extensive catalog.

To customize your reading experience, you can choose five different font sizes and three color schemes -- white on black, black on white, and sepia -- and adjust contrast via a slider control. Device orientation is supported, allowing you to read in portrait or landscape mode. Kindle for WP7 also offers you recommended reads, and you can preview the first chapter of a book before deciding whether or not to make a purchase.

The Amazon Kindle app for Windows Phone 7 is a free download from the Zune Marketplace. Scan the Microsoft Tag code (after the break) with your phone for a hassle-free install.

iControlBits for iOS lets you manage your Transmission torrents

There's a New Year's treat for Transmission users waiting in the App Store. It seems Apple has approved iControlBits -- a new app that can remotely manage your torrent downloads. Apple has historically blocked any torrent-related apps, like Drivetrain, an app very similar to iControlBits, which was submitted last May.

The app sells for $1.99 and gives you the ability to monitor and control (pause, resume, stop, and delete) existing downloads. There's no option to add new torrents, though the developer has told TorrentFreak that feature is has already been coded and should be delivered in the next update -- but it will be interesting if Apple allows iControlBits to remain in the App Store long enough to see said update.

Microsoft's Hotmail Active Views -- a vetted interactive email solution

activeviews
Email as we know it is a fairly static beast; you get text, and maybe some links and images, but that's about it. After all, allowing email to run code within your email client or browser could be mighty risky.

On the other hand, there's lots to be gained by "interactive email." Imagine receiving a form, which you can fill-in right from within an email message; or getting a search widget that you can use right from within the message to get the exact content you're interested in.

That's what Microsoft's new Active Views for Hotmail tries to do. Microsoft has taken a bunch of enterprise partners, starting with Orbitz and Monster.com, and allowed them to run code right from within your email. Since the partners (and email content) are carefully vetted by Microsoft, potential security concerns are kept to a minimum allowing users to enjoy the power of interactive forms and search widgets without the danger of hidden malicious code.

As the platform grows, more and more enterprises will be able to send interactive email. However, being a Hotmail-only prospect (at least for now), and since it's mainly useful for large advertisers, it is uncertain whether Interactive Views will gain much traction. Still, it's an interesting experiment. Just in case you're still at a loss as to what Active Views actually is, Microsoft's kindly made a video explaining the whole thing, which we've included after the break.
