Hotmail users lose entire email inboxes, Microsoft restores them 5 days later

Hotmail lost emailHotmail users have only just had their email inboxes restored after a few long, worrying days. The data loss began at the end of December, with the Windows Live Solution Center spawning over a thousand "help, my inbox is missing!" threads, and only now is posting beginning to dry up. The exact number of affected users is unknown, but could easily be in the millions.

Microsoft hasn't yet stated the cause of the massive data loss, but considering some users lost email inboxes spanning years, we should be glad that adequate backups were kept. The data loss occurred around December 28, and it affected everything in Hotmail accounts, including sent items. Some users reported that the only message they had been left with was the classic "Welcome to Hotmail" email.

Still, it seems like everything is now back to normal. Considering just how much data was lost, it was probably a crashed database server which then had to be restored -- but hopefully Microsoft will let us all know what really happened.

Update: Microsoft says that 17,355 accounts were affected by the outage, which was apparently caused by "mailbox load balancing between servers."

Verify by Zurb lets you perform real-world usability testing for your website

verify
For Web developers, designers and managers, each design change involves a ton of small and large decisions. What color scheme should we go with? Should this element be larger or smaller? What will people remember once they glance at my page?

More often then not, we sort of wing this part of the job. We may ask a couple of people we know, but most small-time developers and internal product teams tend to act on gut instinct. It's not because people don't care, but because it's often difficult to gather actual data. You can use Google Analytics for some things (A/B testing for conversion rates), but Analytics data won't tell you what people remember after looking at your page, or if a certain timestamp format is more or less friendly for your comment threads.

We've covered a couple of applications by Zurb before, and now they've released a new one, aimed at providing just this sort of data to product teams. It's called Verify, and it basically lets you create a set of tests based on your Web page, or mock-ups of possible versions of the page, and then send them out to customers or large groups of internal users.

The tests are fun: In one test, you get a few seconds to look at the page, and then you're asked what you remember (like previously-covered Clue). Other tests produce a heat-map of clicks: People are asked something like "Where would you click to learn more about us?" and then you see what they do.

Verify isn't free, but for what it does, it seems quite affordable (starting at $9/month). I've put up a short video showcasing it after the jump.

Clickfree Introduces New Clickfree Wireless Backup Drive

We all know that backing up our computer’s hard drive contents is a must do operation. That said, how many you out there actually do it? The better question is how many of you aren’t doing it? Not backing up your data (pictures, documents, videos, etc.) is like playing Russian roulette. You might never get [...]

Honeycomb will not require dual-core CPU as minimum hardware spec

Oh, never mind then. Google's ever-informative and ever-knowledgeable Dan Morrill has disabused the world from the bogus belief that Android's "made for tablets" iteration, aka Honeycomb, will require a dual-core processor as a minimum to run. Dan says there are no specific CPU requirements for aspiring Android 3.0 tablets to meet and we should all sit back, relax, and enjoy our breakfast. That's reassuring to note, but let's not read more into it than what's said -- while Honeycomb might not technically require a dual-core beastie to power it, there's a reason why the Motorola Xoom (which is soon to become the first device to offer Honeycomb onboard) is launching with a Tegra 2 chip inside.

[Thanks, Dean]

Internet Explorer's decline leaves Firefox as #1 browser in Europe

Firefox #1 browser in Europe
Proving the Old World can still be positively refreshing when it comes to some things, the unstoppable decline of Internet Explorer in the motherland has finally left Firefox with the European pole position.

Internet Explorer, across all versions, lost about 8% of its market share between December 2009 and 2010. Firefox, on the other hand, by losing just 3% of its share, has ended up on top. The biggest winner, and seemingly the only browser to gain market share, is Google's fleet-footed Chrome browser, which began the year at 5% and ended at almost 15%.

In the rest of the world, Internet Explorer is still by far and away the most popular browser (at least according to StatCounter). In fact, the only other territory where Firefox is in the lead is Antarctica...
