Google to launch unlimited video streaming service in the U.K. first

Google, no doubt more than a little leery of Netflix's entrenchment in the U.S., is planning to launch an unlimited on-demand movie streaming service through YouTube in the U.K.

The Big G has been talking with Hollywood studios for months, and has set aside $100 million to secure some big deals. According to one Hollywood executive, Google will launch both video-on-demand and 'channels,' which could even pit it against conventional European TV providers like Sky.

By launching in the U.K. first, Google will still have to beat LoveFilm, which was recently bought by Amazon. Presumably Google will attempt to create a beachhead, which it will then use to try and tackle Netflix in the U.S., and a variety of on-demand services in Europe.

AMD compares upcoming Llano Fusion APU with Intel Core i7, puts the heat on Sandy Bridge (video)

So far, AMD's new Fusion chips have been all about the low-end, whether you're talking in terms of price, performance or power consumption, but the company has a vision for its future that has these new Accelerated Processing Units dominating every segment of the market. In order to do that, AMD will need to overcome Intel's latest generation of mainstream processors, the Core 2011 family we're more familiar with under the Sandy Bridge codename. Before you rush past the break and watch AMD's own comparison between said Intel hardware and the forthcoming quad-core Llano APU, be aware that processor performance can rarely be generalized from a single test alone and the one we're witnessing is specifically geared to highlight the Fusion chip's strengths. All that said, the workload demonstrated by AMD -- a 3D game, HD video playback (plus post-processing on the Llano rig), Excel calculations, and some 3D modeling, all running simultaneously -- is handled most impressively by the A8-3510MX APU, which even manages to use less power than Intel's 2GHz Core i7-2630QM. See the video after the break.

[Thanks, Vygantas]

Picasa Web Albums now store unlimited small images and videos

picasa web free photo video storageRecently, some users of Google's Picasa Web service noticed something odd. Like Gmail, Picasa Web tells you how much of your total available storage you're using. Something appeared to be wrong, however -- users were reporting having more free space than they previously had. It's common for Google to silently bump our upper storage limits, but how were these users showing the same number of photos and far less of their storage used?

Turns out it's a change in Picasa Web policy, and a darn nice one at that: images under 800 pixels and video clips under 15 minutes no longer count against your storage limit.

That's certainly great news for anyone who uses Picasa Web to store images for blogging -- 800px is plenty wide for most layouts. It also makes Picasa Web a great place to upload and share all the lower-resolution photos you snap on your Android phone.

As for the 15 minute videos (which arguably take up more more drive space than an 800px photo)? Google has a voracious appetite for video, and might just be hoping that Picasa Web users will help it maintain its dominant position in terms of serving videos on the Web.

GroupMe iOS and Android Apps Updated With Free Data Messaging and More [Apps]

We fell in love with GroupMe at CES, but at that point the app itself was sort of secondary to the whole experience; you used it once to set up your group, and from then all the magic happened via SMS. No more! Today, the free GroupMe apps for iOS and Android both got huge updates, putting the app itself front and center to the group chat melee. More »

Microsoft's Rahul Sood says every PC industry exec should use a MacBook

Voodoo founder Rahul Sood has never shied from controversy -- he famously cut a cake with a MacBook Air during his tenure at HP -- and today he's expressing his love for Apple hardware from his pulpit as a Microsoft exec. "Every executive in the PC industry should use an Apple notebook," Sood tweeted today, implying that they were of higher quality than those that come with Windows by default. That certainly sounds a bit like a shot at Microsoft, but according to ConceivablyTech he may actually be pointing at his former employer HP, as a series of private status updates point to HP's unwillingness to compete at the high end of the laptop marketplace. "We could have done it - just need a few years of patience, and investment in our tooling/process," the message reportedly reads, "We really could have done it. [...] ‎...especially with webOS, what a combination that would have been." We're actually pretty happy with our Envy 14 -- lack of Radiance Display aside -- but we can't help wondering if it coulda been a contender with Voodoo DNA on board.
