Fractal Lab
Fractal Lab might be coolest demonstration of WebGL and JavaScript that we've ever seen here in the Download Squad bunker. If you've ever studied Mandelbrot sets -- either willingly, or for Computer Science at high school -- Fractal Lab will change your perception of iterative, recursive maths for ever.

At first glance, Fractal Lab isn't immediately exciting -- in fact, when you close the Help dialog, all you get is a blank checkerboard. It's only when you start hitting some buttons that you realize just how awesomely powerful this demonstration is. If you haven't opened the site up yet, do so now. Then hit '3D,' and wait while your CPU renders your fractal design. What you will eventually see before you is drawn using WebGL and the GLSL shading language.

If that wasn't cool enough, you can move around the rendered object! Scroll in and out with the mouse wheel, move around with W and S, A and D. If you have a powerful computer, un-tick 'Preview mode' at the bottom; it'll make everything look rather beautiful.

Then, when you're bored of that, start moving through the tabs: Constants, Fractal, Camera, Colour and Shading. Each and every one will radically change the rendered object, or how it's displayed in your browser. Pick some new numbers (change the 'Fractal type' on the Constants tab!), then hit Recompile.

And yes, if you weren't excited enough about seeing an actual, real-world application of WebGL, you can even save your fractals using HTML5's localStorage feature!

Fractal Lab is a small piece of genius, and hopefully a good sign that more awesome things will soon gush from the HTML5 and Open Web pipeline.

You don't want to leave your lifeline unattended, but you don't want to give up your seat either. Asking the stranger next to you to keep an eye on things seems like a hassle and toting a lock seems too logical. So what do you do? You get our own Sam Biddle to babysit your laptop for you using Facetime. He's available on weekends, and on weeknights between 5-10p, provided he's finished his homework. More »

In the tower at the airport, air-traffic controllers peered at their monitors only to find that their system for tracking incoming planes was malfunctioning. At the Naval Medical Center, emergency pagers used for summoning doctors stopped working. Chaos threatened in the busy harbour, too, after the traffic-management system used for guiding boats failed. On the streets, people reaching for their cellphones found they had no signal and bank customers trying to withdraw cash from local ATMs were refused. Problems persisted for another 2 hours. More »

Tue, 08 Mar 2011 09:52:20 -0800 Popular gay dating app Grindr now available in the Android Market http://kyliefross.posterous.com/popular-gay-dating-app-grindr-now-available-i http://kyliefross.posterous.com/popular-gay-dating-app-grindr-now-available-i

Straight app said to be in the works, too

Good news for our Android-loving gay male readers. Grindr, a popular location-based social networking application designed specifically for gay men, is now available in the Android Market.

Grindr is a unique app that utilizes GPS information to enable guys to interact with and meet other guys in the area. Users can view profiles and photos, share stats, chat using Grindr's built-in instant messaging feature, and if all goes well -- meet in person. Privacy controls allow users to share as much or as little information as they're comfortable with.

Grindr introduced its application to iOS users in March 2009. The Los Angeles-based company now has an impressive 1.5 million members, spanning 180 countries worldwide. On a daily basis, 300,000 members login and spend an average of 1.3 hours using the app. Grindr has also said they're adding new members at a rate of 3,000 members each day. By adding support for both Android and Blackberry (beta) users, Grindr hopes to accelerate this growth even further.

Grindr is free for download in the market. There's also a premium version that removes ads, increases the number of favorites a user can have, displays message notifications when the app is running in the background, expands the number of guys users can see in the area, and enables a feature that allows users to swipe back and forth to browse through profiles. The premium version runs $4.97 a month after a free 7-day introductory trial.

Grindr is also said to be developing a version for straight men and women also. Check out all the details at Grindr's blog, and grab the download links after the break. [Grindr]

With a population of more than 1.3 billion people, getting your app launched inside China's borders could be a very good thing for business. That's what Groupon thinks, too, and its new China spin-off Gaopeng.com aims to bring local deals to connected Chinese users.

Estimates peg the number of Internet users in China at around half a billion. Groupon will be fighting for market share with other group buying services, and it has apparently partenered with Tencent -- which develops China's most popular instant messaging app QQ -- to get Gaopeng off and running.

Competitors aren't totally thrilled with Groupon's arrival, and not just because there's another deal site in China. Groupon has been accused of poaching staff -- and competitors have firmly stated that employees who leave for Grouon will not be welcomed back.

Angry Birds St. Patrick's Day
In the next few days, the awesomely adventurous, angry, avians will find themselves flying through the lush, emerald greens of St. Patrick's Day-inspired levels. The new levels are expected to be a free upgrade to the free Angry Birds Seasons game, which is available on Android, iOS, Symbian and WebOS.

St. Patrick, if you're not an any-excuse-for-a-party American, is the patron saint of Ireland. Green is national color of Ireland, which is why everyone wears green for St. Patrick's Day, and thus why the new Angry Birds levels will be green too. The game is expected to arrive "before St. Patrick's Day," March 17.

In other news, Angry Birds: Rio, which accompanies the big-screen film of the same name, is also due out later this month.

Yow. Western Digital -- the company responsible for shipping the planet's first 1TB 2.5-inch hard drive way back in 2009 -- just announced a monstrous deal to acquire one of its primary competitors, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. Both outfits have actually shown quite a few interesting HDD designs in recent months, and it's pretty clear that WD would rather not go at it alone any longer. Granted, these types of deals aren't entirely unheard of -- in fact, Seagate swallowed up Maxtor back in 2005 for a cool $2 billion. Under the deal, which is a mix of $3.5 billion in cash and $750 million in WD common stock, the two will combine in a way that sees the Western Digital brand and headquarters surviving, while Steve Milligan, president and chief executive officer of Hitachi GST, will join WD at closing as president. Hard to say what this will mean for consumer pricing and competition, but we're pretty certain the powers that be will be looking it all over for fairness before they hop in the blender during Q3. Full release is after the break.

While the Adamo brand might be dead, Dell's quest for the ultimate ultra-slim laptop is anything but buried. The boys from Tejas just let us in on their plans to unveil a new "ultra-slim" consumer laptop in April guaranteed to "excite and delight" with its "beauty and brawn." Naturally, the new slimster will be riding the reintroduced Cougar Point chipset and Sandy Bridge processors from Intel, as will some new Dell Inspiron systems on deck for an announcement next week. Of course, Dell will also be shipping Cougar Point options for business customers soon, including Sandy Bridge Latitude laptops, Optiplex desktops, and laptops and desktops from its Precision lineup. But hey, we know most of you are only interested in the ultra-slim and its "innovative new form factor." Read the calculated tease from Dell after the break.
